All,

I am looking at purchasing a steering system for my 52 Ford. As I was reading on about this decision, I came across a note that a Vega steering box should not be used on anything over 2,800 pounds. My Ford from the factory was 3,070 pounds. I installed a big block chevy which is probably close to the weight of the original weight of the straight six I took out, removed the inner fenders, no front bumper...etc. Question is do you think a vega box would work?

Thanks!

Vega steering boxes are a natural, used by race, cars, funny cars and gassers since the 70s. Don’t bother trying to find a used one. Just buy a new one from Borgeson, they are the best and most reliable, and usually based upon the original tooling out of Detroit.

A 525 box is the same bolt pattern, and sells for the same money as a quality Borgeson box, and would be a better choice. A Borgeson Vega box will work, but even they state their box isn't intended for heavier cars. But I have one in my '39 Chev, and a friend who has one in his '55 Pontiac gasser. I wouldn't buy anything but a Borgeson Vega box if you go Vega, as all the cheaper Chinese boxes will fail.
