Yikes! Looks like an early Chevy suspension/crossmember with huge extensions on it to raise the frontend! I can't even begin to imagine the steering and handling issues that would create!!
You're right about them! They should have their tools taken away before they build something that will kill somebody when they lose it! That's one of those "just because you can, doesn't mean you should!" situations!
I'm puzzled by it all. I wonder why he didn't put the channel back to back in order to use the factory holes to mount it? It would still be scarey, but slightly less than that.
I think this guy may have just shown up over on the HAMB forum! There's a guy there who mentioned he just raised the front of his '50 Chevy by spacing the suspension up 5"!!!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=777585
Looks like he did some further welding and bracing in the recent pics he posted there. Still wouldn't be my idea of a good way to raise the car, but at least it's more solid in appearance.
When I was in the service back in the late 60's, I built a 61 Corvette, (not a gasser) I drove it all winter with snow tires, something you would never see today. The young guy I sold it to worked for the railroad. He unbolted the frt suspension and used a chunk of RR track on each side, and what is called ready rods to raise it up in frt, and really long shackles in the rear. It looked cool, but it was just nasty handling.
