Tires back in he 60's were not as available or as good as they are today.

The tires that most people use on their car today to capture that 60's look" are called "pie crusts" in either racing slick or cheater slick design.

Tire widths were also narrow compared to what most people think of being the "right size/width" today..... 7" up to 10" were very common sizes used back then.

Those old hard pie crust tires are what really inspired the nose up gasser look, and the newer tires that were softer compounds, wider, and thin sidewalls were what allowed the gassers to lower ther front ends. The nose high stance gave more weight transfer needed with those old pie crusts to get hooked up.
You can get a brand new pair of pie crust in 9" from Towell City in NC for around $300 a pair.
