Petronix ignitor III

Anyone ever have a chance to use one?
I just did on my latest build and what a product……performance is ok buttttttt,
The cost is a few hours beating your head with your timing light and constant checking of initial and still only a guess to what # your at. I’m defeated 😞 and just succumbed to listening to motor.
The first thing is you MUST use their .32 coil so make sure and order it!

rev limiter is easy to adjust with a 9v battery prior to attaching to dizzy , but is super touchy with turning incriminates.
From what I’m reading is it will read at least 10* off. I have a 6-3/4 balancer and it will not run whatsoever at 12* I just kept throwing timing at it and it felt good at anything from 21*-25* my springs and bushing is all in at 35*

pulled my new plugs out and opened them up and it seemed better so far as for idle…….after messing with it all week I finally have it where it feels good, need to drive it for the shakedown and see what demons if any are lurking.
Just curious if the masses had any input?💭😵‍💫💭

I never used Petronics but it sounds like if you’re in at 35° total then you’re golden because usually 34 to 36 is the target For a small block Chevy. Is that what you’re running?
Only Pertronix parts I've ever used were their conversion kits to change to electronics on Chevy distributors. Hope you figure it out. Have you talked to Pertronix to get any input from them?

Spot on 35* and he’s a beast…. 3000rpm so when I stuff it! It’s animal all day.

Yes I did speak to Petronix and general counsel was to tune by ear…..it’s a decent setup with no magnetic ring above needed, it reads the shaft where the felt rubs . So maybe that’s why it’s off so much. Not used to not knowing my initial so I’m guessing about 15*
….. I can tell the difference immediately when adding or subtracting time and it seemed to stay alive sounding where I have it now at 25 on my dampner. So I say it’s a success and the ride this weekend was proof shakedown completed and ready for next build. But don’t think I’d use the ignitor 3 again… I like to know my data.

Had a Mallory Unilite distributor in the sbc of my Willys pickup that took a shit so I put a Pertronix kit in it. Had a problem timing it and discovered the inertia ring had slipped on the balancer hub so I bought an 8" balancer. When I went to time it the timing marks on the balancer and on the cover tab were off and an adjustable tab didn't have enough adjustment. I purchased a Moroso timing tape for the 8" balancer, set the #1 cylinder at TDC, applied the tape, timed it and everything was golden.

That was a problem as well at the time I had no tape and I wasn’t in the mood to give up (hate that feeling of defeat with something you do all the time), I did purchase a new sfi rated 6.75 balancer and it has 360* markings so it was installed and the Igniter 3 was all over the place. The car would still crank and fire with little labor even at 45* initial………

Thanks for your insight! When I use the tapes on dampners I always apply more adhesive to ensure that they stay put.

I usually buy the timing tape also as I like having more than the usual short range factory marks many balancers have.
