Still thinking the past week or so has been a DREAM!!!!!..... and for a change it is a "good one" ! ! ! !

We went to a "swap meet" (in Canfield, Ohio) a couple of weeks. After spending ALL morning searching for hot rod parts & goodies we (my wife "Gina" is also an avid piston head) made a quick pass thru the CAR CORRAL to check out some of the cars for sale.

It was an extremely "HOT DAY" & we were both "beat" from spending hours looking for parts. After starting the truck (love remote starter) so it would "cool-down" agreed to take a "quick-look"at the cars for sale. As usual, we saw quite a few nice cars/hot rods we would love to have in our garage.

One in particular caught my eye. It was a OPEL KADETT .... but NOT the coupe or the popular GT models ...... it was a 2 door-station wagon. Talk about unusual ..... and nowadays.... "rare". Especially in its current form..... an old school gasser - SBC w/350 turbo tranny - Ford rearend w/ladder bar suspension - and the engine setback big-time (entire engine is under the cowl) ;)

It was "for sale" but now that I am retired and on SS my "just buy it days" are over with for now!!!! So I took a few pictures to put in my "wish-we-had-file" and drove back to Pittsburgh with a "mild attack" of "gasser-fever".

I have been a BIG FAN of gasser style cars since I built my first "Revell" model car back when I was a kid (Stone-Woods & Cook Willys). Almost bought a '42 Willys sedan last year but just couldn't get enough $$$ to make the deal.

So a few days passed .... I'm still thinking about the Opel..... so I download the pictures I took of it at the swap meet .... take them into a Photo Shop program.... enlarge the picture of the windshield containing the "for sale sign" and then "zoom-in" on it and "bingo" there is the guy's phone number. :)

So I give him a call to see if he sold the Opel or not..... He did NOT SELL IT.

So I ask him if he would be interested in a "even-up-trade" for a street/strip El Camino???? After exchanging pictures & info via e-mail we agreed to trade. Three days later the Opel is sitting in my driveway.

So here I am..... Looking forward to sharing and getting to know all the gasser guys and hot rodders on this forum.

I'll post some pictures as soon as I figure out what I need to do to get them here.

Thats great! Welcome. Can't wait to see the pics.
Welcome! Nice horsetrading! Pretty good idea to enlarge the pictures too!
Great find and a hearty WELCOME to the board John. Yes, anxious to see the pics. The Opels always made a great looking Gasser but I've not seen any made out of the wagon. Is it user ready or a project? Great having you here. Mark L

Thanks for the "welcome".....

I goofed up when filing out he info for my profile. I thought I downloaded a picture of the Opel for my avatar but I must have NOT saved it.

The avatar pictures is there now so at least you can get a general idea of what the car is like and there is also a picture of the engine compartment in my "profile".

The car was 100% strip-only when I got it. As you can see in the avatar pic it does have somewhat of an overall stock appearance. Not too radical as many Opel Kadetts & GT's end up being once they get converted to the drag strip.

Like Mark's 63 Poncho..... I was also building a non-period-correct gasser..... a G-Body ('80) El Camino. It was "street legal" - 358ci - 5 speed - It was a project car that needed paint & interior 9" Ford rear end & a Speedway straight axle to be done.

I was just about ready to take the front clip off to install a fiberglass IROC Z Camaro front nose, light weight tubular radiator support and a rear rollpan with Corvette tail lights. Fortunately, the car was still in one piece. The guy I traded with was looking for a car that was "street-worthy" and I was actually NOT looking at all.... ha!!!!

As soon as I saw the Opel & how it was setup I knew it had my "name on it". It will need a complete exhaust system - wiring - ALL lights - wipers, etc... etc...... I am going to LOVE every minute of working on the unique piece of "drag racing history"..... even more unique because it is a "station wagon".

With the recent resurgence of interest in gasser styled cars & nostalgia drag racing many "I want to be different" hot rodders are opting to build "one-off-hybrid" gasser-looking cars like Mark is doing with his '63 Pontiac....

Case in point....Here's a pic of a G-Body Malibu (which many hot rodders are calling the "shoe box" of our time):

>>>>> I assume to post pictures on this website I have to have a place on the internet to "store" my pictures in order to download to here????

Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Open a free Photobucket account, then you can load the pictures there and post them here. I'm not computer saavy and I found it was very easy to do!
Building something different was my plan when I built my '46 Austin gasser, but people keep mistaking it for an Anglia, so I guess it's not different enough! :)
Hey welcome " MILNER" bet you have the rarest car in the valley.Sure is a rare one.
Hi and welcome! Nice ride. We love the dare to be different cars here.
Welcome aboard! Ain't it funny how certain things in life seem to "find" you?
Good luck and keep us updated with pix.
Hey John I forgot to mention that I use Photobucket to get all my pics etc on the boards. Works really easy and well. I also forgot to tell you that I retired after 37 years from Nestles Confections and Snacks, plant is in Burlington WI. If you are familiar with the $100 Grand and the OH Henry candy bar items from Nestle. Both bars are run on the same line after changeovers. I was in charge of that line twice while there thru the years. Yup. I was making the Candy. Mark L
