Really a sad weekend here.
I got up Friday morning to hear a motor running in front of the house at 6:00 a.m. I looked out the curtains and saw a big motor home with outside lights parked right at my driveway! Weird. Grabbed the dog to take her out and casually investigate this thing, and when I stepped on the porch I saw cops and cop cars everywhere! There was crime tape closing off our entire 2 block street, and a patrol car blocking each end.
As I sat the dog down I heard a voice ask, "Do you need to go?" I thought it was my neighbor, so I jokingly said, "No, just the dog needs to, not me." Then I turned to see a cop standing there, and asked what was going on? He told me someone was shot and killed across the street at 2:00 a.m. and did I hear anything? Of course that's 4 hrs. after I hit the sack, so I didn't hear a thing. I asked which house, and he pointed at our neighbor Chris, whose a single 38 yr. old who lives alone there. I asked if he was OK, but the cop said he couldn't tell me anything.
So I went inside and turned on the morning news just in time to see video of our neighbor being lead to a car in handcuffs! I figured maybe it was standard procedure for anyone involved whether they were guilty of anything or not? So I waited an hour and called our daughter, who works at the County DA's office and asked her to check. She discovered nothing other than what we already knew.
Then Saturday two homicide detectives came over to interview all the neighbors and we asked what they knew? All they could tell us is Chris was charged with 2nd degree murder, and unlawful use of a firearm, which everyone gets added on if they broke the law using a firearm. But they did say, "Sometimes good people make bad decisions, and then they have to live with that the rest of their life."
Neighbor next to Chris said he heard shouting at the time between two people, and then gunshots. Detectives said Chris called 911 himself, and stayed there waiting for police to arrive. So appears we've lost a guy I always thought was a good neighbor, and never dreamed could do something like this. It feels almost like they told us he died. Pretty sad.
