My buddy and I went to the Hotrod Nationals at Woodburn Dragstrip today. Drove our Austin gassers so we could have some fun cruise time. I've never cared what I got for mileage, as I didn't build it to be an economy car, but We filled our tanks prior to the trip and did a 100 mile roundtrip to the drags and back. Filled again when I got home and used ....I averaged about 15 mpg with the 327 and 3.73 gears, little stop and go ....Was a pleasant surprise......
GREAT ...... Being on the highway also
prevents you from doing another BIG "gas-user"...... How often you "rev-up" the engine. Seems like this "un-avoidable" habit cannot be controlled. Especially every time you pull into your local drive-in hamburger joint....
Hey '46..... did you take any pictures???
BTW....We had a
very special cruise night this past week. At our local Sonic a memorial/reunion cruise was held for Pittsburgh International Dragway (1964-1976). Pittsburgh area first drag strip.
There was a really nice turnout of cars.... from a former National Record Holder (Marvin Ripes' '57 Chevy wagon) to real-deal Yenko Camaros.
I almost didn't make it to the show. Took me a
LOT LONGER to finish fabbing the "temporary" exhaust system w/electric cutouts...... but it was worth doing.
Got there after the cruise had been going for a couple of hours so the place was packed!!!!! So I slowly putted-in looking for a parking spot and hit the dash board button to "open" the headers..... needless to say it caused a "stir".
Being the Opel came from out-of-state NO ONE had ever seen it before..... even most of our friends.
The most asked question of the night
"What is it" ..... HA!!!!!
A very special treat for all was to have a picture of your car taken with the
original starting line Christmas Tree that was used at the dragstrip.
"Those were the days my friends we thought they'd NEVER end"....... but they DID!!!!! :0(
