Even gassers can get decent mileage!

My buddy and I went to the Hotrod Nationals at Woodburn Dragstrip today. Drove our Austin gassers so we could have some fun cruise time. I've never cared what I got for mileage, as I didn't build it to be an economy car, but he wanted to check his.
We filled our tanks prior to the trip and did a 100 mile roundtrip to the drags and back. Filled again when I got home and used just over 6 gal. of fuel! I averaged about 15 mpg with the 327 and 3.73 gears, going around 55-60 mph both ways, with very little stop and go traffic.
Was a pleasant surprise, and much better than I ever dreamed it would get. Were taking another trip up to the Cascade Mountains tomorrow, so more up and down driving. About the same distance, so see if it uses about the same amount of fuel.

Cool Val, we usally attend a show up in Tahoe Calif every year, its a mountain run from 33 foot above sea level to 6500 feet, 125 miles one way, I get 17 there and back, very laid back show, cool ( ave temp there is 72 ) and friendly 3-day show, been to Hot Aug Nights in reno for about ten years, but quit going when things just got nuts and to crowded...
I used to go to HAN every year, but also quit when it got too regulated and crowded. Haven't been there for probably 10 years or so.

GREAT ...... Being on the highway also prevents you from doing another BIG "gas-user"...... How often you "rev-up" the engine. Seems like this "un-avoidable" habit cannot be controlled. Especially every time you pull into your local drive-in hamburger joint....

Hey '46..... did you take any pictures???

BTW....We had a very special cruise night this past week. At our local Sonic a memorial/reunion cruise was held for Pittsburgh International Dragway (1964-1976). Pittsburgh area first drag strip.

There was a really nice turnout of cars.... from a former National Record Holder (Marvin Ripes' '57 Chevy wagon) to real-deal Yenko Camaros.

I almost didn't make it to the show. Took me a LOT LONGER to finish fabbing the "temporary" exhaust system w/electric cutouts...... but it was worth doing.

Got there after the cruise had been going for a couple of hours so the place was packed!!!!! So I slowly putted-in looking for a parking spot and hit the dash board button to "open" the headers..... needless to say it caused a "stir".

Being the Opel came from out-of-state NO ONE had ever seen it before..... even most of our friends.

The most asked question of the night "What is it" ..... HA!!!!!

A very special treat for all was to have a picture of your car taken with the original starting line Christmas Tree that was used at the dragstrip.

"Those were the days my friends we thought they'd NEVER end"....... but they DID!!!!! :0(

I never seem to remember a camera. Always having too much fun to take pictures.
I know what you mean with the "what is it?" questions. Probably get that more than any other question.
