With the carbs sideways i can make any adjustment to them without removing them, but the throttle on the rear carb hits the top of the plenum on the intake manifold with them sideways soo add a 1" spacer problem fixed lol. And they look way cooler sideways vs inline.

Been pretty buisy with work recentlyso not much time for the jeep but spend about a half hour before i leave for work tinkering on it. Got the steering stuff in from speedway, just need to get the correct size 5/8 bolts. Also got the trans in and besides moving the mounts up i can reuse the crossmember i made.

The carbs turned sideways don't allow enough clearance between the lower part of the throttle arms and the intake manifold. So a spacer raises them enough to clear.
Looks like I was typing at the same time as you Jim.
OK, I got that part, but is there an advantage performance wise to use a spacer?

It depends on the rest of the setup. If the engine is built to run higher RPM's and it has a short dual plane intake, then a spacer will help the engine reach higher rpm's. But if it's already got a tunnel ram, or hi rise with open plenum then the addition of a spacer may not help, and might even result in losing more low end performance.
I have a 2" spacer under my carb on the '39 to help the Edelbrock Performer RPM get more top end power. It has plenty of low range torque, so adding the spacer just widened the powerband for my engine.

Can we go back to why spacers are needed or wanted? I am a little confused.
I believe the Holley throttle brackets hit the base of the manifold. I had that situation on my dbl pumpers. Had to use a spacer to raise carb up a little.
sorry I’m a little too late.

New heads painted and bolted down huge difference in chamber design and exhaust ports..intake ports are just a little bigger. Old heads had thermactor ports in the exhaust port they take up alot of room and prob cause terrible flow. Chamber size is going from 70cc to 58cc.... Now to install the cam and lifters then valvetrain. Going together slowly, but its getting there..

Probably a good idea to use the known intake and carb, even if it means more work to swap it later.
Yeah i figured ill probably leave the old carb and intake manifold setup on it till i get it on the road and have the rest of it dialed in..so for now im just enjoying the tunnel ram sitting ontop lol

Nice work. Looks great. STP additive has the zinc for the flat tappet cam. Not too pricey either.

Wanted the front axle to sit a little farther forward so i drilled out one more hole in the spring perch for the center pin on the mill moved it another inch forward so 2 inches total now farther forward than it was stock. Also cut the front axle shafts and milled them smooth and flat to hold the front bearings together. Gotta change some of the plug boots over to 90deg boots for header clearence, and engine should be ready to fire up! Cant wait to hear this thing!

Finally had a few hours of warm weather saturday so i pushed the jeep out of the garage and fired it up. Ran it for 35 min between 2-3k rpms. Gotta pull the distributor and reclock the distributor so the vacuum advance isnt hitting the thermostat housing. Drained the oil sunday and looked clean no metal in it, same as the filter had no metal in it just a small amount of flakes in the bottom of the filter housing. So far from what i see the cam break in was a succes. Gonna pull the valve covers check the rockers and pushrods. 🤞🤞 ill try to take a video of it running this weekend after i go over everything.
