Good read! It's always irked me that the Ford Mustang always gets credited as the first pony car when the Barracuda beat it to market. I was a bit surprised to see a regular '67 Camaro, and a '69 SS350 listed, but not any Z28 listed until 1970 on their list? The old 302 Z28 was quite a car for it's time, and loved by a lot of drivers. The '70 was indeed a big improvement in handling over 1st gens, but never has gotten the fan base the first gens have.
with Vall on the early Z28s'. First off my favorite style was and is the first generation Camaro. Sometime back I posted photos of the 67 I had. I had a buddy who bought a new 69 Z28 and had the dealer install the factory cross ram. If memory serves me correct none of the Z28s' came from the factory with the cross ram installed. It was strictly an over the counter part that could be purchased and installed by anyone or by the dealership.
I think you're right Steve. They were designed for Chevy's factory Trans Am racers, so anyone else had to buy them from the dealer.
Back in 1970 I came home from basic and tech school and my best friend came over to visit. He was driving a brand new butternut yellow '69 Z/28 with black vinyl top and SS stripes. It was the fastest factory stock car I'd ever ridden in! Then a year later I came home on leave and he came over in an identical color combination '70 Z/28 Camaro! He had traded in the '69 and gotten a new '70 less than a year later. It was even faster than the '69 302 Z/28! It also made me want a 2nd Gen Camaro badly So when I got out of the service I bought a used '71 Camaro SS 396 with a dealer installed 427 in it.
