    Not sure. You might need either special bearings, special side gears, or some work to use the larger 31 spline axles. 9" Fords aren't cheap to rework. Even when someone gives you one for free, it can cost more to make it work than buying a different axle. I had a 9" for my '63 Falcon, but sold it when I found out what I'd have to put into it.

    I've been looking at the 8.8 Ford. 31 spline, limited slip, disc brakes, and 4.1 or 3.73 gears in some of the explorers. That might be the way to go.

    Impossible to beat at the price. They are a copy of the 12 bolt Chevy rear axle, and even share numerous parts. Built in the same plant too.
    The Explorer and 4x4 Rangers have an offcenter pinion, with a short side axle. They are about 59.5"wide, and can be very cheaply narrowed to 56.5" by simply cutting the long side down and swapping a factory short side axle in. That narrows it, plus centers the pinion too! The 56.5" width works very well for a lot of 50's and 60's tubbed cars, or cars with big meats that need a narrower rearend.

    I think thats the way to go since the stock width of my car is 57.5 inches. I found one locally for 225 , which isn't much more than our local pull and save.

    Our Pick N Pull will sell the short side axles from a non posi for $20. They work on either limited slip or open, so no issues. Easier to remove from a open differential. Then it takes a 2 7/8" approx. cut in the tube to use the short axle on the long side after shortening.
    I use a big Ridgid tubing cutter to get a perfectly straight cut, and then the tube can be butt welded back together. I tack with my mig, and then take the axle to my welder to have him get a really top notch strong, and great looking weld. He does them for about $20-$25.

    1946 Austin you are full of great information! I think that is definitely the way to go, thank you for the help.

    Okay, so I took two years and built a shop, put a lift in, and I'm back up and running. I got Jezebel into the shop this weekend. Since then I sourced an 8.8, a floor pan from a 58, a 460, and the 69 460 heads. The floor is pretty gone and the rockers are shot. I'm contemplating cutting it all out in one piece and putting the new piece in including the firewall. I would weld in braces first in the body. Anyways, here's a few pics.
